With increasing cultural exchanges, interpreters have played an increasingly important role in cross-cultural communications.Specifically speaking, interpreters should not only be able to deliver the original meaning from source language to target language, but also minimize the loss of culture-related information. In consecutive interpretation, words carrying culture-specific connotations often create headache for interpreters,as they must be understood under certain cultural contexts and their equivalents in the target language are sometimes hard to find.Besides, interpreting culture-loaded words become even more challenging given the nature of consecutive interpretation. Therefore, when interpreters encounter culture-loaded words, they need coping strategies to get the message across. This essay sets out to discuss problems when interpreting culture-loaded words with detailed analysis and propose possible coping strategies to which interpretation students can refer.Based on the interpretation of the welcoming speech at Nanjing Chemical Park, the author seeks to summarize and analyze culture-loaded words during consecutive interpretation and propose relevant strategies, namely, transliteration plus explanation, using similar expressions in English, selective omission and generalization. In practice, interpreters should make a case-to-case analysis and use these strategies in a flexible way.
