Amy Tan is a famous Chinese-American woman writer whose works mainly focus on the exploration of mother-daughter relationship and Chinese-American women's pursuit of their self-identity.Published in 2001,The Bonesetter's Daughter is Amy Tan's fourth novel and also the most autobiographical one of her works.Coming out in the 1960s,the ecocriticism has experienced a series of development, and has become a vigorous literary critical theory.Chinese scholar Lu Shuyuan has summarized the ecocriticism as the study of three relationships, which are the relationship between man and nature, between man and man,and between man and themselves.Based on Lu Shuyuan's theory of ecocriticism, and by close reading of the novel, this thesis attempts to analyze The Bonesetter's Daughter from the perspective of natural ecology, social ecology and spiritual ecology, aiming to explore the ecological thinking in the novel—man should respect nature and pursue the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, man and other man,and man and themselves, which is the appropriate and sensible way to get over the natural, social and spiritual crisis. The author hopes that the study can offer a new angle to study Chinese American literature and meanwhile can deepen people's comprehension of ecocriticism.
