A Study Of "Dream Narratives" In Milan Kundera’s Novels

"Dream" runs through almost every novel of Kundera,most of them contain plot chains,backgrounds,figures and dialogues,which are all in the traditional narrative rules.Although they do not follow the principles of reality,they do not hinder their existence as "narrative".These "dream narratives" are often regarded as an inserted paragraph in the text,and independent of the main narrative without affecting the story process.They also have a vaguely discernible boundary with reality,which provides the possibility for independent research.There is nearly no systematic and comprehensive research on it interiorly.On the one hand,it is related to the sensitivity of the novels’ theme and the social environment.On the other hand,it is due to the aesthetic implication of the text is covered by his strong theoretical consciousness and existential philosophy.However,if we can tear off the labels of "Exiled writer" " Philosophical speculation " "Existence" " Kitsch" and " View of novels " on Kundera,and only look at the literariness of his works,we will find a richer novel world,which is full of uncertainty but more poetic.Formally speaking,"dream narrative" can be incorporated into Kundera’s experiment of the novel structure reform.They are an indispensable part of his polyphony novel theory and have equality with other narratives,clues and styles in the novel.In the later stage,with the change of his concept,the boundary between dream and reality even disappeared unconsciously.They have been to be the main clue of the whole structure,which further promoted his novel experiment and realized his dream of" free structure" to the greatest extent.Influenced by psychoanalysis of Freud,Kundera also consciously used dreams to construct a situation of character which corresponds to the reality.They are beautiful fantasies which are opposite to reality or visualization of characters’ inner anxiety,which can examine existence more thoroughly so as to complete the self-building of a novel."Dream narrative" is self-sufficient,just like philosophical speculation in his novels.As an important plot source of the novel,they neutralized the cold logical thinking in content and style.Moreover,their mysterious dream images enriched the language of his novels,and bringing readers into a fantastic alienation world.Finally,they revealed Kundera’s tender feelings which are hidden behind his philosophical speculation,humor,games and cynical tone,and forming the writer’s personal "dream lyric" style.
