As the number of Chinese tourists in Japan increases,the demand for Chinese speaking talents to work in Hokkaido’s service industry is also growing.Studying Chinese has become all the rage in Hokkaido.In order to meet the demand for Chinese teaching in Hokkaido,the Confucius Institute of Sapporo University was founded in 2007 as the sole Confucius Institute in Hokkaido.This paper is designed to study the Chinese teaching of the Confucius Institute of Sapporo University.Many study methods were applied,including the use of documentation,interview,questionnaire and classroom observation,so as to investigate and study the curriculum,faculty,teaching material usage,students as well as Chinese cultural promotion of this institute.This study aims to find out the shortfalls occurred during the development of the Confucius Institute of Sapporo University.The causes of these problems were analyzed and the author’s suggestions are also off made in this paper.The main body of this paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter expounds the research background,research significance,research status and the contribution of this paper.The research thinking and research methodology of this study is also introduced in this chapter.The second chapter begins with a brief introduction to the Confucius Institute of Sapporo University,which is followed by an introduction to its curriculum,including term setting,content of courses and class grouping.Third,the paper analyzes the students from the angles of basic situation of students,academic motivation,and their understanding of Chinese and Chinese elements.Fourth,the faculty is analyzed from the perspectives of basic situation of teachers,teaching plan and teaching methods.Last but not least,the paper expounds teaching materials including its use and authors’ nationality.The third chapter points out the problems in the institute’s curriculum,faculty,students,and the use of teaching materials,as well as the causes of these problems.The fourth chapter proposes solutions to the problems of the institute’s curriculum,faculty,students,and use of teaching materials.The fifth chapter is the conclusion of this paper.This paper is based on the author’s research and on-the-spot investigation into the present situation of teaching in the Confucius Institute of Sapporo University,and points out the problems in the Chinese teaching of the institute.This paper can serve as a reference for the faculty and the students of the Confucius Institute of Sapporo University,so as to improve its quality of teaching.At the same time,this paper can also be used as research materials for other experts and scholars in the field,and offers some experiences for teaching Chinese as a foreign language and its promotion.
