| Quand reviennent les ames errantes is the most recent novel by Francois Cheng, the first Chinese-born French academician.According to Le Monde, this novel is full of philosophical ideas. The writer,in the form of Greek tragedy, takes an epoch-making event of the Warring States period:Jing Ko assassinates the king of the Qin.Based on the historical records, the author also brings fictional elements including the heroine Chun-niang.The narrative plot is about friendship, love and death among Jing Ko,Gao Jian-li and Chun-niang.Moreover,in compare with the studies on the poems of Francois Cheng, studies on his novels still leave enough space to develop and deepen abroad as well as in China. As for the most recent novel,Quand reviennent les ames errantes, his studies are limited to a few newspaper articles in French and Chinese, they are free to interpret, from different angles of research.Through the interpretation of the traditional Chinese culture and the re-reading of the literary canon, the writer elaborates the image of men of honor, namely Jing Ko,Gao Jian-li,Tian Guang and General Fan,he then shares his own opinion about the soul, destiny as well as death,by speeches of his characters.Through an analysis going from the superficial to the deep, this memoir seeks to study precisely the image of the men of honor,by theory and methods of the imagology, resulting from the image of men of honor, the connotation of this image and the approach of elaboration. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the main part is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the analysis of man of honor in Quand reviennent les ames errantes. The author of the present thesis firstly presents the birth and formation of the man of honor from a macroscopic perspective, and then makes a comparison between the man of honor in ancient China and the medieval knight in France.Later, the author of the present thesis also analyzes the image of men of honor reflected from this novel from a microscopic perspective. This study summarizes the culture of the man of honor. Thus, the courageous, lucid, emotional and justified men of honor who are struggling against the tyrant and willing to sacrifice themselves to the need arose boldly on the papers. The second chapter focuses on the connotation of the image of men of honor.First, the man of honor carries a Chinese cultural connotation in an intercultural context;second, the life of the man of honor is a projection of the life in exile of the author in his youth, who expresses the loneliness of the wandering soul;third, through the conversation of the characters, the author not only sings the praises of love and friendship, but also appreciates the value of suffering for life. The protagonists believe in fate, whereas they refuse to bend their knees to fate.In the face of death, they are firmly convinced that their souls will meet in the afterlife. At the end of the story Quand reviennent les ames errantes, the author tells the world that to experience the real life is to go through the whole thing. The third chapter explores descriptive techniques by developing the image of the man of honor. This chapter focuses on the content and the form of the text,it is mainly structured around three axes, the Greek tragedy, the diversity of the writing, the combination of fiction and reality. The form of the Greek tragedy allows us to understand the context with the application of the choir, and then to accurately grasp the thought and connotation of the text by penetrating the hearts of the protagonists by virtue of monologues. Moreover, his theme of destiny coincides with the thought of the destiny of the author;Francois Cheng especially keeps track of Chinese,he thus forms his own style of writing by attaching importance to the poetic expression:rhythm, musical language and so forth. The author interprets the historical event, and using his fictional character,Chun-niang,he succeeds in transmitting the conception of love in the man of honor. The legendary love of the three characters testifies their revolt against ethics and feudal rites. The writer makes a typical,world-renowned Chinese story in the form of Greek tragedy.Apart from showing traditional Chinese culture,he also asks the deepest question about human destiny, which is also important to our modern life. This memoir seeks to explore the deep connotation of the man of honor by analyzing this image of the text,in order to find the important value and the particular significance of the Chinese story-telling in French in the intercultural context. |
