A Study On English Expressions Of Chinese "Yue Lai Yue" Based On Construction Grammar

The Chinese construction “yue lai yue” appears frequently in written or spoken language.And language has the feature of transferability,which makes contemporary Chinese students use English to express the meaning of “yue lai yue” more frequently.When they express the meaning of “yue lai yue”,they tend to use “more and more”,“better and better” and the likes,but do not know more English expressions.With the rapid development of internet big data,using big data has become a popular trend today,and it also has the characteristics of practicality and scientificity.Therefore,the study of English expressions can also use big data to illustrate some language issues.The correct use of English phrases and various English expressions by native speakers can be identified through some examples,frequency of use,and collocations of constructions in corpus.This thesis specifically studies the following three issues:1.What are English expressions of Chinese “yue lai yue” construction ?2.What are the characteristics of the various English expressions of Chinese “yue lai yue” construction?3.What translation methods and techniques can be used when we translate Chinese“yue lai yue” construction into English?Based on the theory of construction grammar,the thesis finds out the English expressions of Chinese construction “yue lai yue” in the Chinese-English parallel corpus of BCC,and analyzes various English expressions by use of COCA.Through analysis,the major findings are as follows: In BCC,it can be found that the constructions in English that express Chinese “yue lai yue” can be divided into four categories,which are the “Grow” Group,“Increase” Group,“Comparative Degree”Group,and “Verbs /Verb Phrases” Group.Using COCA,the frequency distribution,the register distribution,the collocation,and syntax features of English expressions of Chinese “yue lai yue” construction are analyzed.This is helpful for Chinese students to choose more English expressions according to different contexts when translating or writing English sentences containing meaning of “yue lai yue”.
