A Study On Challenges To Patriarchy In Wonder Woman

The movie Wonder Woman is a 2017 American superhero movie adopted from DC comics character of the same name.Different from the previous Marvel or DC superhero movies which are dominated by male characters,this film is ranked as the “first female-led superhero movie”,marking a breakthrough in the development of superhero movies.Undoubtedly,Wonder Woman has been labeled as a feminist movie.This thesis will focus on Wonder Woman's challenge to patriarchy with the adoption of patriarchal theory,discourse,gender theory,male gaze theory,etc.By detailed analysis of her discourse,gender roles and her interaction with the main male characters,it proves that Wonder Woman successfully poses a challenge to the authority of patriarchy.The main body consists of four chapters.The first chapter traces back to Wonder Woman's history.Through a chronological review from Wonder Woman's birth till the interpretations of the character today,it will prove that Wonder Woman has been a feminist icon for decades;The second chapter will concentrate on Wonder Woman's subversion of stereotyped female gender roles from examining of her different roles in the movie;The third chapter focuses on Wonder Woman's challenge to patriarchal discourse by analyzing her conversations with the main characters;The last chapter tries to demonstrate Wonder Woman's challenge to patriarchal mindset through the analysis of three pairs of binary oppositions.
