The View Of Naturalism From Quine’s Philosophy

Naturalism is an important concept in western philosophy.It originated from ancient Greek philosophy,and is still active in contemporary philosophical stage.As a concept,the meaning of naturalism is complicated and inconstant ever since its emergence,and has been compatible with a variety of philosophical theories and schools.The concept of naturalism was born in early natural philosophy,and it had not been separated from natural philosophy until modern philosophy.After a long medieval period,naturalism revived with the rising of modern natural sciences,and obtained an independent position in philosophy.In the first place,as a form of skepticism,naturalism threw out a challenge to traditional metaphysics,and afterwards,naturalism,in an alliance with scientism,becomes a new trend in modern philosophy.Naturalism of modern philosophy is first proposed by American philosophers in the 1920 s,and then absorbed into contemporary analytical philosophy trend.American philosopher Willard Van Orman Quine is the most influential naturalist among analytical philosophers.Quine developed his holism philosophy in his critique of two dogmas of analytic philosophy,and his holism is based on naturalism.Considering Quine as a master of analytical philosophy,the influence of naturalism upon analytic philosophy,and its significance in contemporary philosophy is considerable.
