Strategies For Consecutive Interpreting On English Speeches:a Report On The Interpreting Of The Speech By Sam Lebovic

The material of the simulated interpreting practice is the speech in the National Archives made by Sam Lebovic,an associate professor of History Department of George Mason University on December 15 th,2016.His speech is an introduction to his new book Free Speech and Unfree News: The Paradox of Press Freedom in America.This speech is of great significance to experts,scholars and students concerned about American culture.They can learn about the related questions of free speech in the United States from this speech.Based on the recording of the simulated interpreting,problems encountered in the process of interpreting are summarized and feasible interpreting strategies are proposed.According to the characteristics of the speech which are both spoken and written language,the problems encountered in the interpreting practice are divided into three categories: expression ambiguity and logical incoherence caused by the feature of the spoken language,and long sentence structures generated by its written feature.For the problems of expression ambiguity,the interpreter adopts the strategies of addition and explicitation.For the problem of logical incoherence,the interpreter adopts the strategies of conversion and reconstruction.For the long sentence structures,the interpreter takes the strategies of grasping the conjunction words and division.This report aims to provide feasible strategies of above-mentioned problems,aiming at reducing the efforts of the interpreters’ memory,comprehension and delivery,so as to improve the quality of interpreting.The experience and lessons of this simulated interpreting practice are expected to be used as a reference for future study.
