A Study Of Intercultural Adaptation Of International Students In China

After China's opening up in the 1980s,the environment of higher education has changed a lot,and more and more international students choose to study different majors in China for higher education.In intercultural communication,intercultural adaptation is very important to international students.This thesis mainly focuses on the study of the intercultural adaptation situation and the intercultural adaptation strategy chosen by international students in China.In order to study the intercultural adaptation of international students in China,this thesis takes 40 international students from school of international education in Hangzhou Dianzi University as research subjects to study intercultural adaptation,intercultural communication failure and culture shock.The thesis adopts the theory of culture shock and intercultural adaptation to do research with comparative analysis method.The first Chapter of this thesis gives a brief introduction to background and significance of this study.Chapter two mainly explores the previous studies on intercultural adaptation theories both domestic and abroad so as to support the study of subsequent chapters.In Chapter three,based on former scholars' theories,this thesis systematically enlightens the origin and development of intercultural adaptation theory and introduces how culture shock affects international students.In the fourth Chapter,the methodology of this study is introduced,and it has been used for the data-collection of 40 subjects and its analysis.In the fifth Chapter,the results and findings are presented elaborately according to the analysis in Chapter four as well as other factors that could change intercultural adaptation.In Chapter six,the conclusion includes three parts: the summary and development of the thesis,limitations of this study and suggestions for further study.This thesis studies intercultural adaptation strategies of international students from the perspective of adaptation in daily life,adaptation in study and adaptation in new culture.It also analyzes the reasons that cause culture shock because of inadaptation to a new culture,and this would also give international students valuable advice to adapt to their new life in China more comfortably.Meanwhile,combined with scholars' studieson international adaptation theory from both domestic and abroad,this thesis has studied application of communicative principles and improvement of intercultural communicative skills through case study of international students,and the study starts from three perspectives which are the form of intercultural adaptation,the performance of intercultural adaptation and the affect of intercultural adaption.The innovation of this thesis would be the guiding significance of learning Chinese culture for international students and Chinese language class teaching.
