Our great educator Han Yu has proposed that teachers, should play the role of “preacher” “imparter” and “solver”. Along with the technical communication development, which characterizes the college English teaching and learning resources as diversification and weaken teachers' authority. In order to make the college English teaching better, College English teachers must enrich connotation of teacher's role and actively encourage their role change from all aspects.This is a research on roles of university English teacher in our country. This essay's based on the postmodern educational thoughts. It adopts such methods as documentation, questionnaire, interview, taking 497 college students and 33 college English teachers from different college by questionnaires, taking 8 college English teachers by telephone interviews and face to face interviews. According to postmodern educational thoughts of the masters, such as William E·Doll, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Michel Foucault, this essay analyses the questions of the authority of the teacher, the function of the teacher, the quality of the teacher and the relationship between the students and the teacher, and expounds the rationality of the existence of the teacher's roles.On the basis of research result and previous description, the teachers should be equal interlocutor, knowledge-leader, lifelong learners and reflector, emotional maintainer, information manager and developer.Finally, combining survey results and the actual teaching situation,the research looks for the causes to implement the roles from several aspects:the relationship between the students and the teacher; teachers' knowledge system and the teaching method; the relationship between scientific research and teaching, teachers' literacy; the information teaching and puts forward corresponding strategies of solution:1)to establish harmonious and equal relationship between students and; 2)to update the knowledge system and improve teachers' quality;3)to promote teachers the reform of examination system;4)to strength college teachers' professional ethics;5)to promote information teaching.
