Tai Chi is one of the traditional Chinese shadowboxing sports, which dates back to more than 300 years ago according to the written history records. Practicing Tai Chi not only builds people's body, but also improves people's overall physical wellbeing. Because of these significant benefits of practicing Tai Chi, the Chinese government has been promoting these traditional sports in recent years. By identifying problems existing in the present Tai Chi promotion through research and survey, this paper aims to promote and offer theoretic support to the development of Tai Chi in Pingdingshan city. Methods used in this research are literature review, expert interviewing, questionnaire survey, mathematical statistics analysis and logical analysis. Respondents in this research are praticers of Tai Chi in Pingdingshan area. In order to gather information about the demographic, skill level and venues for practice,460 questionnaires were given out. The research findings are:1, the promotion of Tai Chi is inadequate and seniors are the main demographic of the Tai Chi practice, which means the popularity of Tai Chi is low among young adults; 2, learning resources are scarce and the management of the venues for practice is disorganized, approximately 80% of the venues are unsupervised, thus most praticers are uninstructed and practice Tai Chi with mistak;s.3, lack of government support, only 1 out of 16 venues researched is funded by the government, and there is no fund for Tai Chi contests and other activities, which could increase the popularity of Tai Chi; 4, lack of venues for practice, most of the venues researched are in a park and shared with many other activities. Tai Chi activities could be easily interrupted by other activities. With regard to the problems found in this research, some suggestions are made for improvement:government departments should work collaboratively to promote the popularity of Tai Chi in schools, which could change the demographic of Tai Chi practice and further promote Tai Chi; relevant departments should introduce laws and regulations to support the development of Tai Chi and more financial resources should be appropriated to venue construction and the introduction of more Tai Chi teaching and management professionals; relevant departments should act as an organizer to promote the communication among Tai Chi practicing groups in the city and suburbs through Tai Chi contests and other activities; some extra supports should be given to the areas where the popularity of Tai Chi is particularly low; a system that incorporates all the Tai Chi practicing groups and organizes activities should be built to support the sustainable development of Tai Chi.
