In the context of intercultural communication, translation works can be defined as the Chinese rendering of foreign works, which consist of political essays, scientific articles, literary works and academic journals. During the early years of the Republic of China, passages of translation works began to be selected into Chinese textbooks for secondary schools, and this practice has continued ever since. This thesis focuses on the translation works which collected in Chinese language textbooks for secondary schools during the republican era of China. In order to make it clear, this thesis intends to clarify the development and performance of targeted translation works, and then analyze the interaction between translation works and modern Chinese education with thematic study. The thesis consists of three parts.Chapter one intends to scan the characteristics of translation works in each stage of development. In the period of transition, conventional Chinese education has been experiencing a transition to modern education. Leaded by the evolution of school system, education policy and curriculum standards, translation texts have experienced a course of gestation, development and decline.Chapter two illustrates the educational functions of translation works. As the texts of Chinese language textbooks, translation works have to be edited and screened to fulfill the purpose of educational practice. The compiled texts intend to take the responsibility of ideological education, helping to convert the age-old values and accelerate the diffusion of new ideas. Meantime, the Europeanization of translation works lead to the rebellion and deformation of modern discourse. The introduction of new forms of language and fresh narrative skills provide an excellent reference to Chinese education.Chapter three underlines the function of translation works in shaping the free and independent consciousness of people. With concrete analysis of typical texts, the article finds out that, when it comes to the shaping of national consciousness, theheterogeneous angle of translation works helps to enhance the sense of national identity, while the homogeneous angle unearths the similar fate among different nationalities and then inspires our people to wise up. Otherwise, a part of translation works take female subject as the object of description, which enhances the instructive function of female consciousness.
