Women faculty with high academic degrees,IQ and capacity are the prominent representatives of American women. Shaking off the glory of reason,their vocational development,however, lacks optimism.This paper focus on their roles as “faculty in university “as well as their roles as “women”,describing their conditions in teaching,research and administration in the environment of university as well as analyzing traditional influence on women faculty.This paper mainly focus on the following five aspects: first part combs the three stages of American women faculty career according to the materials provided by other researchers including women faculty as absentees,women faculty as dummies,women faculty as speakers.The second part introduces the vocational condition of women faculty,including academic qualification,teaching,research,service and salary.The third part analyze the main problems in the vocational development of women faculty. According to the formal analysis,there are mainly four problems, including the vocational separation to the women faculty in science, the sexual tendency in evaluation,contradiction between work and family,the marginalization of women in administration.The fourth part summarizes the strategies.Aiming at solving these problems,American government,universities and associations have employed different strategies from respective angles.The fifth part concludes the enlightenment. We can absorb some enlightenment for the career development of women faculty in our country,by considering the progress,conditions,main problems and strategies of American women faculty in their career development.
