This paper focused on Korean students who studied aboard in some key universities in Shanghai during the 1920s to the 1930s,for the purpose of exploring the situation of their studying abroad in Shanghai and illustrating the meaning of it.By analyzing the related historical materials of South Korea,China and Japan in modern times, this paper took a positivist approach to Korean students in Shanghai from multiple perspectives. After China and South Korea established diplomatic ties, with the research on the provisional government of the republic of Korea in Shanghai becoming deeper, the Korean students in Shanghai were also mentioned as a part of the independence movement. However, most of the leading research focused on the participation of Korean students who involved in the independence movement, and the entrance situation.First of all, this paper started exploring the background of the Korean students in Shanghai from two perspectives:the higher education environment in China and South Korea and the situation of Korean national liberation movement in the beginning of the 20th century. The development of higher education in Shanghai in the early 20th century,Koreans who were "eager to learn" and the insufficiency of South Korean domestic education facilities, the outbreak of the 1919 March First Independence Movement and the establishment of the provisional government of the republic of Korea in Shanghai were important influences on young Koreans who chose to study in Shanghai.Chapter Two investigated the scale of Korean students and their academic status in the 1920s to 1930s in some Shanghai universities. The Korean students mainly studied in Tongji University,Hujiang University, and Fudan University;however, most of them were middle school students. For many reasons, many Korean students didn't complete their studies.Chapter Three carefully examined the representative groups of Korean students and students in the independence movement in the 1920s.The representative groups includes:Shanghai Korean Overseas Students Union,East Chinese Korean Student Union,Korean Students in Shanghai Associate and Shanghai Koreans Associate. As the situation of the independence movement was changing, student groups also split once. But after that, for integrating independent forces, student groups became reunited again.By the on-and-off of Korean student groups,we can roughly grasped the ideological trend of Korean students in 1920s or 1930s.In addition,by analyzing the independence movement group--Young Korean Academy and Young Men's League in Shanghai of Korean students, and the participation of "the May 30th Movement" of Korean students,we can understand the independence movement of Korean students. Finally,by examining the sporting activities of Korean students and their movements after graduation,we can understand Korean students' life in Shanghai and identify the significance of Koreans who studied abroad in Shanghai. This thesis focused on introducing Korean sports leaders and representative sports players, and at the same time also analyzed the students who participated in the Far East Games and Football expedition.Next, this thesis expects to fully illustrate the meanings of studying abroad in Shanghai by analyzing Korean students' lives after graduation.Although many Koreans students didn't graduate from the university, many of them were active in South Korea in all areas, and made great contributions to the communication of China and South Korea in modern times. All in all,Koreans students in Shanghai in that period as an important part of modern Shanghai Korean society, are of special significance to our understanding of modern Shanghai Korean society and young Korean students studying in China nowadays.during the 1920s to 1930s,Korean students in Shanghai were active in universities as well as participating in the independence movement.Under the condition of the domestic shortage of education resources,South Korea cultivated many useful people in Shanghai by studying abroad.Through the study of Korean students who studied in Shanghai in a relatively long period and played leading roles in various student groups,we can roughly understand the actual situation, ideological trend and the meaning of Korean students studying in Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s.
