In the teaching activities of algebra in the junior high school, enough practice in class and after class is an effective way to consolidate new knowledge and check students' mastery of it. The selection of exercises and the way to compiling and making new ones directly make differences on students' learning quality. Compiling and making variant exercises can not only enlarge students' learning space, teaching them how to raise questions but also increase teachers' professional quality by making more targeted exercises and offering references to those in the textbooks.This essay adopts the literature research method, case study method, classroom observation method and interview method. First, the author searches a large number of relevant documents to make a basic understanding of the current researching situation and make sure the main methods of studying questions and compiling exercises. At the same time, variant exercises were tried preliminarily. Next, by observing the classes, interviewing and knowing about the sources of exercises used in daily teaching as well as the situation of exercises' making and compiling, the author finds out the existing problems and appropriately modifies the variability dimensions, levels and quantity of the exercises according to what teachers offered. Then, the author does some teaching practice aimed at part of the cases and observes the students' performance on the class exercises, making adjustment of designing the after-class ones. At last, combined the interviews with students and performance of unit testing papers, the result and effect of practice research are finally analyzed.There are four parts of the result in this research.First, the main methods of making the algebra variant exercises in junior high school are variation of attributes and forms. Variation of attributes means that the relevant knowledge points vary with critical attributes and non-critical attributes, of which the first step to change is to make sure the basic exercises. And the defining method of basic exercise is to clarify all the attributes of the knowledge points, finding out the corresponding requirements in the curriculum and making the test of the corresponding attributes in the most direct way, thus the basic exercise is finished.Second, the standards of good variant exercises are as follows:1) Targeted. Moderation and simplification in quantity.2) Progressive. Gradient to some extent.3) Various. Changing dimensions in all sides.5) Flexible. Important mathematical thoughts of extension and generalization.6) Non-crafty. No traps on purpose.Third, the variation dimensions of algebra exercises in junior high school are mainly defined by the attributes of the knowledge points.Four, the variation levels of algebra exercises mainly means increasing the difficulty of relevant attributes. While the difficulty is adjusted according to the requirements of curriculum and the students' specific situations. Last but not the least, through specific class teaching practice, the pertinence and effectiveness of those variant exercises compiled and made will be verified.
