A Study On The Cultural Adaptation Of Ethnic Vocational College Students

Since the 1980 s,under the guidance of the national and educational policy,the Ministry of Education constantly encourages the youth of ethnic minorities to study in the mainland.Therefore,some of the ethnic districts have developed their economy,and the students have benefited a lot from the more excellent educational resources.With the employment of the “9+3”policy and the financial support from the General Office of Finance,the number of students who choose to study in the Mainland is gradually increasing.However,the students have suffered from the cultural gap in different aspects,such as learning,psychological and social problems.So,my research targets the students at the Sichuan Engineering Technical College,which is one of the schools that applies the “9+3” policy.My paper takes literature,interview research and questionnaire.After giving out 126 copies of questionnaires and retrieving 105 effective ones,I have analyzed all of the materials and interviewed several students who seem to have more typical problems.This research mainly focuses on the adaptation capacity of the ethnic vocational college students to the cultural gap,the reasons that cause the problems,and I hope to come up with solutions and suggestions to it.Here are the results I obtain after analyzing the questionnaires and interviews.Although some of the ethnic vocational college students have shown enough capacity to adapt to the new environment,there is a good number of them have obvious problems to adjust themselves.Some students are weak to adapt to the weather,but they do not mind the food and accommodation.Some students have trouble socializing with other people.For example,they do not know how to communicate with each other and how to express themselves;they do not trust others when they are with their friends,and they feel their friends do not trust them as well;they act a little bit aggressively because they lack the sense of security.These students also have psychological problems.For instance,they do not open up their mind and do not get along with others well,so they always feel lonely.According to the research,these are some reasons why the adaptation capacity of ethnic vocational college students varies.First of all,family education and environment have impacted the students subconsciously.Secondly,the experience the students have gone through will highly affect their adaptation capacity.Thirdly,their points of view to the mainstream culture influence their capacity in a long-term way.Lastly,the management from school and support from education will impact the students' judgment.Therefore,I think we should give guidance and support to all ethnic vocational college individuals from a school and society point of view.
