The national English curriculum standards published in 2011 emphasizes that there should be something changed in the key points of the English teaching in our country.It emphasizes that we should not only change the over-emphasize explanation of the grammar and vocabulary in the traditional English teaching classroom to develop students' overall abilities of using English,but also change the passive teaching style to initiate students' learning motivation and interest in English reading.It requires that we should pay more attention to the cultivation of students' abilities of automatic learning.Thus,the teachers should adapt their traditional English teaching concepts and teaching methods in order to meet the requirements of the English curriculum standards.The essences of the multiple intelligence theory conform to the concepts of the English curriculum standards.In 1983,Gardner put forwards the multiple intelligence theory in his book Frames of Mind.The theory points out that everyone owns eight kinds of independent intelligences with different development level for different people.It emphasizes that the teachers should respect and accept the unique intelligence of students.The teachers can design different kind of effective and scientific English reading teaching activities to develop students' overall development of their multiple intelligence and their English reading abilities.In this paper,the author applies the multiple intelligence theory in the English reading teaching.Regarding the two classes of grade eight students who are in Yanchi center school in Hunan Province as the experimental class and the control class,the author analyzes the students' development level of their multiple intelligence and English reading learning situation with the instruments of the questionnaires,tests,classroom observation,SPSS 17.0.The author designs the individualized English reading teaching activities in order to find out whether the combination of the theory and the English reading teaching can improve students' motivation and learning interest in English reading or not,and also try to find out whether the application of the multiple intelligence theory in the English reading class can develop students' English reading abilities and scores or not.With the four months' individualized English reading teaching,the author finds that the students who are more interested in English and their English reading abilities are improved significantly in the experimental class.The result of the research shows that the application of the multiple intelligence theory in the English reading teaching can initiate students' learning interest and improve their English reading abilities.This research is conductive to applying the MI theory in English reading class,which is also conductive to helping the teachers and students to learn more about their own multiple intelligence and learn to make full use of them to solve the difficulties.It is also conductive to promoting the promotion of the multiple intelligence theory in our country.
