The Disciplined And Consumed Female Body

With the tremendous development of the social productivity,the degree of social civilization has been greatly improved,the body as the material basis of human existence has more extensive and profound social implications.Social sciences and humanities started to study the body in social life,body gained a great voice to challenge the authority of soul.The establishment and development of the sociology of the body changed the relationship between nature and society.The body/mind binary opposition tradition had been questioned and overthrown.The body became a key idea of sociology.In consumer society,the female under the male's cultural hegemony has been further disciplined and shaped.Symbol capital trait of female body makes it be the object of further discipline and consume.Under the complicity of the economic interests and patriarchal culture,female body has become consumed commodity and symbol code;through the cooperation of mass media and the male gaze,female body received the discipline of consumerism and the male culture,and the female accepted it as their own pursuit of physical aesthetics standards and behavioral norms.Cosmetic surgery broke the huge gap between the ugly and beauty,which turned the competition of symbol capital into economic capital contest.The old way of interpreting and shaping the female body was direct compulsory promotion and“other-cruelty”predominated by popular culture,which had become subtle manipulation of capital and women ‘s voluntarily “self-constructed”behavior.Most women are still bound by the patriarchal society and have no consciousness of their own independence.To change this situation,government should supervise and manage the mass media reasonably,regulate female images in commercial advertisements;it also need to strengthen the management and regulation of cosmetics industry and cosmetic surgery industry to ensure consumers' rights and interests and their physical and mental health.The female should improve the discourse ideology and use the new media to create and propagate the new gender image;social organizations with discourse power should help to change the disciplinary social environment for women and realize the true gender equality.Individuals,especially women,should be wary of the highly-developed materialistic society,building their own independent consciousness to resist the further discipline and consume of capital and male gaze,to pursue own independence and to establish more equal,harmonious intersexual relationship.
