Writing ability is an important index to measure students' comprehensive ability of using language.Writing teaching plays a key role in English teaching.However,at present,teachers lack the awareness of writing teaching and ignore writing instructions and directions.Little by little,students have no idea how to write English compositions and would not love to write.Based on the zone of proximal development,Scaffolding instruction which is student-centered and attaches importance to learning process is increasingly focused on by linguistic and educational circles.The author attempts to apply scaffolding instruction to English writing at senior high schools,aiming to examine the effects of scaffolding instruction on writing ability and writing attitude.The research subjects are from an average liberal arts class in a senior high school in Shandong Province.The author adopts action research including three stages based on the model of planning,action,observation and reflection.Pre-test,post-test,questionnaires and interviews are used as research instruments to carry out the research.The data from the pre-test and post-test are collected and analyzed by using SPSS.And the data from the questionnaire and interview are collected and analyzed by using EXCEL.After about four-month experiment,through the results and discussion from the data,it can be concluded that scaffolding instruction applied to English writing in senior high schools can increase students' English writing ability in terms of structure,content and language.Exactly speaking,the writings are coherent and logic.And there are basically the required points in the writings.What's more,the expressions are correct and genuine.At the same time,scaffolding instruction used in English writing can help students to strengthen students' emotion to English writing and show a positive attitude in terms of interest,initiative,habit and confidence.Although the research has many shortcomings and limitations,it is of great significance for senior high teachers and scholars to apply scaffolding instruction toEnglish writing teaching and for English teachers to reflect and enhance themselves.
