The Disappearing "body"

As one of the most famous British Contemporary artists around the world, Antony Gormley has been using “body”as his main sculpture language for decades.To Antony Gormley,“body”is a potential place rather than just a “object”.It inhibits the “subjective space”and occupys the “objective space”as well.Guided by these ideas, Antony Gormley begun to make classical “bodycase”works as he called like《THREE WAYS: MOULD HOLE AND PASSAGE》in the 1980 s and 1990 s.But from the beginning of the new centurey,a couple of different “body” styles start to emerge and have became the most recognizable symbols of Antony Gormley’s art nowadays.In this paper,I will try to expose the main power which push Antony Gormley’s art forward by analyzing the changing styles of his “body” works.
