In the 19th century,the Great Britain had the most powerful strength in economy and politics in the world.The British was the maker of the two Opium Wars.Naturally,the Qing China attached great importance to the diplomatic relations with the Great Britain.The Chinese embassy in the Great Britain was the earliest and one of the most representative Chinese embassies in foreign countries.As an important intermediary of the Sino-British communication in modern time,the Chinese embassy in the Great Britain was at the forefront of the collision of the Chinese culture and Western culture.According to the international law,the diplomatic embassies had the right of diplomatic immunity,so to some extent it might be said that the Chinese embassy in the Great Britain was an isolated island of modern China in the Great Britain,namely"China in the West".In examining the Chinese embassy in the Great Britain in late imperial China,this paper tries to explore the everyday life of the diplomatic officials in the embassy,that is,how did they look at the exotic culture?How did the British culture and custom shape their way of life and their ideas?How did they resolve the conflicts between Chinese culture and British culture?Finally,what kind of Chinese stories were performed in the embassy and how did they be retold in a Western way?...
