There is a complicated interaction between C.G.Jung?s concept----Synchronicity and the Chinese classic I Ching. On the one hand, affected by Richard Welhelm?s German translation of I Ching,Jung was enlightened, and he regarded I Ching as an eastern cultural example of Synchronicity; On the other hand, when Jung was utilizing I Ching as a support of his theory,he was also interpreting I Ching from the angle of his Synchronicity concept. The essay “Foreword to the I Ching”,which was written by Jung in 1950,is exactly concentration of this interaction. So “Foreword to the I Ching” is actually as the introduction of my thesis,I tend to figure out how Jung use his Synchronicity theory to interpret I Ching and Chinese mind in this essay.Through the analysis of “Foreword to the I Ching”,I try to present the two sides of Jung?s interpretation of I Ching: one is the seeming commensuration of Synchronicity and the Chinese classic I Ching----in its local context, and the other one side is that Jung actually used his own theory---the unconscious psychology, which is actually the real model of Synchronicity to interpret I Ching.Chapter One is for analyzing the content of “Foreword to the I Ching”,as well as presenting the tension of Jung?s interpretation of I Ching.Chapter two is the introduction of the meaning of Synchronicity. There are two dimensions of the meaning of this concept: its general sense that involves culture, philosophy, religion, etc.and its narrow sense that involves Jung?s unconscious psychology.Chapter Three writes for the distant correspondence of Synchronicity and I Ching, which mainly presents the effective dimension of Jung?s appropriation of Chinese mind?s wholeness and acausality.Chapter Four writes for the conflicts of Synchronicity and mind of Chinese traditional I Ching, which emphasizes on contradiction of perspectives of telepathy and time in the two different cultural contexts. So I tend to investigate in how Synchronicity appropriate and reconstruct the meaning of I Ching and Chinese mind through Chapter Three and Chpter Four.Through Jung?s interpretation of I Ching,I find that there is truly a tension in the “sympathy” of Jung and Chinese mind: On the one hand,Jung tried his best to approach Chinese traditional I Ching mind;On the other hand,Jung could not escape from his own psychological mind,he evidently used his unconsious to interpret I Ching and appropriated it to construct his own theory.
