"Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone" Film Music And Sound Techniques Research

John Williams,as one of the most outstanding film music composers in the world,has created a number of excellent film sound tracks.This thesis selected John Williams’ 2001 soundtrack works-Harry Potter and the Sorcerer`s Stone as the research objectives.The soundtrack is going to be divided into theme music and atmosphere music,both of which are explored in harmony techniques.This thesis is going to analyze his thoughts during the creation of this film’s music through the research of John Williams’ harmony technique.The thesis is composed of four parts:The first chapter: John Williams and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer`s Stone.In the first two sections,John Williams’ life and the background of creating the music in the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer`s Stone is going to be introduced briefly in order to provide support for the later analysis of film music.In the third section,the author divides the film music into two kinds-the theme music and the atmosphere music,and summarizes their characteristics,paving the way for the analysis in the second and third chapter.The second chapter:the theme of the scores and analysis of harmony technique.In this chapter,The theme music is going to be divided into the themes of Hedwig and its nine derivative themes by taking the theme music as the breakthrough point and summarizing the important theme of Harry Potter and the Magic Stone.The first section introduces the roles that ten themes play in the film and connections between the ten themes from the aspect of the creation.In the second section,the Hedwig theme,the core theme in this film,is going to be meticulously analyzed in harmony.The third chapter:the Atmosphere scores and analysis of harmony technique.The fourth chapter:A Glimpse of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer`s Stone scores.Based on the analysis of the second and third chapter,this chapter summarizes the connection between the specific emotion and the harmony technique in the film so as to further understand the effect of the harmony technique on the screen and provide guidance for the creation.Epilogue: On the basis of the analysis of the above four chapters,the author summarizes the harmony techniques John Williams used in the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer`s Stone,and then glimpses the methods and ideas when John Williams created the film music,providing guidance and inspiration for composers when creating film music.
