The Explanation ofLiushu is book written by Jiang Zhongkui,who lived in the end of the Qing Dynasty and the early years of the Republic of China.The book embodied the view of Jiang Zhongkui about Liushu while explaining the meaning of Xushen,which is the purpose of the book.The Explanation of Liushu is the research object in this paper.The paper try to evaluate its achievements and deficiencies comprehensively and objectively on the basis of deeply analyzing the book.This paper is divided into four parts:The first part is the introduction.This part discusses the reason of my choice,the actuality of the research about The Explanation of Liushu,states the purpose and the methods of studying this book.Now,the academic world paid a little attention to The Explanation of Liushu,Based on the source material,this paper analyzes The Explanation of Liushu with the original words,the words,the gloss and other materials,trying to understand the opinions on Liushu of Jiang Zhongkui and evaluate the academic status of him reasonably.The second part is the summarization of The Explanation of Liushu.This part mainly introduces the author,edition,the forming process and the purpose he wrote this book,the compiling style,the stating style,the collation of Shuowen.Besides,this part states the methods to explain The Explanation of Liushu,,terms he usually used,and illustrates variant form of Chinese characters that he used.The third part is the theory of Liushu that The Explanation of Liushu,which including six sections:Xiangxing,Zhishi,Huiyi,Xingsheng,Jiajie,Zhuanzhu.This paper discusses the six sections separately.Jiang’ s opinion on Xiangxing basically coincide with Xushen’s.However,his view about Zhishi is complexed.He divided Zhishi into three sections:Zhishi,Xiangshi,and Chushi.There are four kinds of Zhishi:Point the characters by the one that are not characters;Point the characters,that can’t be called characters,by the characters;Trying to point by adding or decreasing strokes of characters;Trying to point with nothing.There are four kinds of Xiangshi:Show directly;Show indirectly;Show because of the characters;Show and Point out.There are four kinds of Chushi:Reverse the characters;Upside down the characters;Reverse the characters transversely.In the eye of Jiang,Huiyi can be divided into three sections:Combine characters with the meaning subtly;Very the form because the strokes of characters can’t combined subtly;decrease the strokes of characters because there are too many.According to the example characters that Jiang listed,Huiyi can be divided into two parts:the forms that are different and the forms are the same one.His opinion about Xingsheng is basically coincide with Xushen’s,too,however,he stress that the parts of Xingsheng must be the characters.There are many details in Jiajie.He thinks Jiajie is the method to make characters and the parts of Jiajie must be the characters.He divided Jiajie into two parts:Jiajie to make characters and Jiajie when we use the characters.Jiajie to make characters could be divided into three parts:Only adopt the pronunciations of other characters,Only adopt the meanings of other characters,Both adopt the pronunciations and the meanings of other characters.Jiajie when we use the characters could be divided into two parts:Only adopt the pronunciations of other characters and Both adopt the pronunciations and the meanings of other characters.Jiang’s Zhuanzhu is actually the combine of Huiyi with Xingsheng.There are The first characters and the characters that adopted the meaning of the other characters.The first characters can be other types,but the characters that adopted the meaning of the other characters all belong to Zhuanzhu.The forth parts is the evaluation about The Explanation of Liushu,trying to summarize its achievements and deficiencies.There are some achievements,mainly including quote the theories of Liushu of many dynasties;commander the examples by Liushu;some of his opinions on Liushu are reasonable;and he analyzed the example characters by the forms of characters that are similar or the methods to make characters are the same one.In the same time,there are also deficiencies in The Explanation of Liushu,for example,he conform Xushen’s view blindly;there are many mistakes about classifications of the example characters;the complex fonts and the familiar style both exist.
