Nowadays,drought stress becomes one of the major environmental problems all over the world.The climate changing leads to the reduction of output and seriously affected on the quality of human life and the developme nt of economic.It is great value to explore the function of drought resistant genes under drought stress.At present,some researchers illuminated that the ferritin gene family may play an important role in specific resistance pathway.This paper illustrates that the ferritin genes FER2 in Arabidopsis thaliana play an important role in the response mechanism under the drought stress.In addition,we had some achievements as follows.1.Drought stress induces FER2 gene's expression.The mutants were more sensitive than the wild type with mannitol treatment.It is suggested that the FER2 gene may be involved in the response under drought stress in Arabidopsis.2.The tolerance of two mutant lines was lower than wild type in drought and re-water assay.The mortality rate is higher than wild type after rehydration.The results were same as the mannitol simulation assay.3.ABA induces FER2 gene's expression.The phenotypes suggested that mutants were more sensitive than wild type when exogenous ABA was added.ABA may involve in the response of FER2 gene to drought stress.4.The mutants showed more sensitive characteristics than wild type when ferrous ions and hydrogen peroxide were added.The FER2 gene may play the key role in the specific pathway.5.The growth of fer2-1 and fer2-2 mutants had no significantly difference between wild type with other treatments such as Na Cl,potassium chloride,Zinc sulfate,copper sulfate and sodium arsenate.So the FER2 gene is not the key to salt stress and metal stress.6.Constructed FER2 overexpression and Pro FER2-GUS expression vectors by the means of cloning FER2 gene and promoter sequence with whole genome DNA as template.Then we obtained the corresponding transgenic plants as the important materials for the follow-up study.In conclusion,there has more ABA than usual when the plant was subjected to the drought stress.ABA can induce the expression of FER2 gene.Then FER2 gene can maintain homeostasis of free intracellular ions.The ROS damage can be reduced through the inhibited Fenton reaction in plant cells.So FER2 gene may positive regulation Arabidopsis response to drought stress.
