In the past 30 years, high performance computing and computational fluid dynamics(CFD)techniques have been widely applied in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering, which greatly promoted and improved the development of numerical wave tank.On the one hand,as an auxiliary means, the rich and diverse functions of the numerical wave tank are complementary to the traditional physical pool technology, which covers the disciplines of hydrodynamic performance analysis and forecasting. On the other hand,as a hot spot of research, the wave tank fully plays the advantages of numerical simulation, while reappearing and supporting the classical theory or verifying the experimental results,it is also possible for the problems that are difficult to complete or even impossible to achieve in the physical model test. Therefore, numerical wave tank becomes an indispensable tool, which is helpful for the design and optimization of ship and marine structures. The present study primarily aims to develop and build a three-dimensional numerical wave tank independently, and to realize and verify the basic functions of the viscous tank's wave making and wave absorption.A three-dimensional numerical wave tank is established through independent research and development.Based on level-set method to track free surface,by defining inlet boundary conditions, combined with the SST k-? turbulence model, and the URANS equation is dispersed by finite difference method, then the simulation of different types of linear regular and nonlinear irregular waves is completed. In order to suppress reflected wave from limited border effectively, different methods of wave elimination, such as adding damping source term to the momentum equation as well as grid attenuation method, are adopted near to the exit of numerical tank. The advantages and disadvantages of the two modes are discussed.Compared with the target wave, the numerical results show that the damping zone is more effective. The present 3-D numerical viscous tank can continuously produce different waves of good stability and reliability in a short time, which can provide a more realistic wave environment and lay a certain foundation for the prediction of ship's seakeeping.
