Natural ventilation,as one of the traditional methods and important means for the thermal design of buildings in Southern China, has significant contributions on maintaining people healthy and comfort and saving building energy. The building wind pressure determines the potentials of natural ventilation.Previous studies have provided comprehensive understandings of wind pressures for single building and two buildings, but very limited for the building groups, and focused on the regularly aligned pattern more than the staggered, enclosed patterns and the elevated design. The present study took the high-rise residential communities in Southern China as objects, analyzed the factors affecting the building wind pressure difference by using the validated numerical simulation methods and established the wind pressure difference parametric models for the buildings in residential communities in aligned and enclosed patterns and with elevated designs. The main conclusions are as follows:1)The proper turbulence models were determined as Realizable k-? and SST k-? by comparisons with the wind tunnel tests on wind pressures of single building and building group, and the numerical simulation methods for the building wind pressure of high-rise residential community were proposed by referring to the up-to-date CFD guidelines for buildings.2)The plan and design parameters were collected for the residential communities in regularly aligned, staggered,‘?' and ‘C' patterns in Southern China by cases study and design codes survey, and the typical high-rise residential community models in Southern China were built for the four patterns.3)Through simulation of the typical high-rise residential community models, the changing tendency of the community wind pressure coefficient was identified, and the optimal wind angel range(30°±15° and 45°±15°),building spaces and group plan patterns were recommended for a better natural ventilation of community;and the changing of building wind pressure difference with community flow field and wake was discovered, the ventilation shadow index was proposed for characterizing the wind shielding effects between buildings, and the wind pressure difference parametric models were established for buildings in the high-rise residential communities in four patterns. The parametric models and other conclusions obtained in this study can be applied to supporting the wind environment assessment and natural ventilation design in the general plan stage of residential community, and can also be used as calculation basis for developing the performance-oriented parametric optimization design tools.
