With the changes of seismic exploration target to complex oil and gas reservoirs, the fine characterization of small faults and micro cracks become more and more important. The accuracy of fault interpretation directly affects the design of the structural map.In the process of seismic acquisition, the influence of various factors leads to the reduction of the signal-to-noise ratio of the seismic data, and it becomes difficult to identify the complex structure of the fault. So it is necessary to make a detailed explanation of the seismic data and further processing. The purpose of fault enhancement is to clearly characterize the fault and improve the signal-to-noise ratio of seismic data.In this paper, the gradient information of the gradient structure is used to determine the direction information of the seismic profile, and estimate the dip angle of the formation and inclination of the event.Based on the gradient information,as well as combined with Kuwahara series filter to enhance the image discontinuity information(edge information),it is possible to enhance the fault characteristics and remove noise effectively. The method is applied to the synthetic seismic records and the actual seismic data. The experimental results show that the filtering method effectively removes the noise interference and gets the defined fault profile information clearly. It is proved that the method has the advantages of improving the fault discontinuity and enhancing the fault structure.
