The salt contaminated soil of Nanchong city of China was to investigate the treatment possibilities.Only lab-scale experiments have been done to suggest the suitable treatment method for the contaminated soil. The basic purpose of the study was to find the removing capacity of sodium and chloride from the soil in the different time period.Salinity and sodicity of the experimental soil were assessed on the basis of electric conductivity(EC)and sodium adsorption ratio(SAR).The experimental soil can be categorized as affected saline sodic loam soil on the.basis of values of EC and SAR as according to the proposed classification of regulatory agencies. It has been found a large amount of sodium and chloride were introduced into the soil by past activities related to the salt industry nearby the site. Results from the experiment with the contaminated site of Nanchong city of China shows that during the leaching process the soil swelled and become dispersed without any addition of any chemicals. It has been observed that physical amendment or leaching only could not remove the salt ions from a contaminated site. The permeability of contaminated soil sustained with the application of gypsum.EC and SAR of soil decreased more along the leaching column with the addition of gypsum as compare to the sand added column and also with the control column. It explains that there is a large amount of Na+ of and Cl-was removed from the soil column with the addition of gypsum. In terms of EC and SAR,the application of gypsum on salt contaminated soil needs a short time to reach the suitable objectives of remediation. It is suggested on the bases of lab-scale experimental results for the salt-contaminated soil, that remediation with the addition of gypsum is more suitable.
