| In construction safety inspection practice, the miss or mistaken of hazard recognition is common, which fundamentally causes the accident rate hard to decline further.Improvement of inspectors’ hazard identification performance is the key breakthrough to the enhancement of safety management.Semantic-based navigation have been proposed by various researches to assist the inspectors in coping with changing site condition and multiple hazards instead of the changeless inspection list. However, the researchers are confined to only illustrate the new forms of semantic-based navigation list, the mechanism and the application effect in construction industry are little mentioned. Thus, this research aims to discuss how semantic-based navigation list works through human cognition process and how much it can improve the hazard identification performance.Literature analysis method was used to structure the safety inspection cognition model based on the typical cognition model and visual search model, and the mechanism of semantic-based navigation list was preliminary revealed. Then the expert interview method was used to discuss and confirm the theory basis and deduction of the inspection cognition model was reasonable and convincible. In addition, this study purport to discover the influence of semantic-based navigation list on inspection performance from the perspective of visual behaviors with an eye-tracking experiment. The eye-tracking technology could record real-time eye movement during the visual search process and form the original date into various eye-movement index. At last,Visual performance and judgment performance were recorded for hazard identification and statistical comparisons were made, concluded as follows. This study structure the model of safety inspection cognition process for the first time in construction industry, along with validating the positive effect of semantic-based navigation list through a comparison experiments.First, with improved inspection performance of goal-relevant hazards,no significant drop in inspection performance of incidental hazards was found. It was validated that the semantic-based navigation list was perceived as a search template so that inspectors could use it to accelerate the reaction to the hazardous scenes and distract less during the search period.Second,to the experienced practitioners, the influence of strengthened working memory on visual behavior and hazard identification performance is more apparent than the novices.Lastly, however,we did not find any significant correlation between semantic-based navigation list and efficiency of information processing, which manifest that the semantic-based navigation list improve the inspection performance mainly through making the right decision in each cognitive cycle other than speeding up the decision making process. This research enlightened the influence of navigation for hazard identification on visual behaviors and inspection performance, serving a foundation for resource allocation of inspection navigation tools in construction. |
