Synthetic fibers are one of the important raw materials for filter materials,and their characteristics have a crucial influence on the structure and properties of the filter materials.With the development of spinning technology,the morphlology of synthetic fibers are becoming more and more diverse.In this paper,the influence of five kinds of PET fibers with different cross-sectional shapes on the structure and properties of filter papers were studied.This study provided a certain reference for choosing raw fiber materials to make high-performance filters.In this article the morphology and papermaking properties of five PET fibers were valuated.Then the influence of different types of PET fibers on the structure,air filtration performance and liquid filtration performance of filter papers were investigated.The contents and the main results of this study are shown as following:Firstly,the characteristics and papermaking performance of the five fibers were analyzed.The results showed that the cross-sectional shapes of the fibers were circular,triangular,trilobal,crisscross,and feng-shaped that was like Chinese character Feng,The diameter of the circumscribed circle was about 15?m,17?m,18?m,17.5?m and 40?m,respectively.Among them,the circular fiber and trilobal fiber can be dispersed in the water better,However,the triangular,cruciform and feng-shaped fibers flocculated in water easily and were difficult to be disperse uniformly.They were dispersed very well in water when 0.1%cationic surfactant was added.Secondly,the influence of the five kinds of fibers on the structure and properties of filter papers was studied.The results showed thatthe triangular,trilobal,cruciform and feng-shaped fibers had no significant influence on the filtration efficiency of the filter paper compared with the same amount of the round fiber.However,the filter papers'structure became loose.The thickness,the pore size and air permeability increased.When the content of PET fiber shaped in triangular,trilobal,crisscross,and Feng-shaped was 40%,the dust holding capacity of the filter papers increased by 8.2 g/m~2,11.7 g/m~2,9.9 g/m~2and 13.8 g/m~2,respectively.Thirdly,the influence of the trilobal fiber on the properties of hardwood filter paper and softwood filter paper were studied.The result showed that as the trilobal fiber content increased from 0 to 80%,the filtration efficiency of the two kinds of filter papers decreased from 50%,15.6%to 11.1%,9.4%,respectively.In addition,the thickness,pore size,air permeability and dust holding capacity of the filter paper increased with different degrees.Last,the influence of three kinds of fibers shaped in trilobal,feng-shaped and circular on the liquid filtration performance of the filter papers were studied.The results showed that the dirt holding capacity of the papers with trilobal and feng-shaped fibers were higher than that with circular fibers.Furthermore the filtration resistance was lower.When the content of PET fiber was 40%,the dust holding capacity of papers with trilobal,Feng-shaped PET fibers increased by 1.12 mg/cm~2 and 1.22 mg/cm~2 compared with that with circular PET fibers,respectively.According to the above research,profiled fiber could improve the performance of the dust holding capacity which means that profiled fibers are important raw materials with lots of advantages for filtration materials.
