Tungsten reinforced bulk metallic glass composites?BMGCs?possess the high strength,hardness,wear resistance and excellent armor penetration performance,resulting in a promising application prospect in military industry.In the past decades,scholars all over the world have paid much attention to the tungsten reinforced BMGCs.In this study,the preparation and properties of tungsten particle reinforced Zr based BMGCs were systematically studied by X-ray diffraction,laser particle size measurement,differential scanning calorimetry,Electron probe microanalyzer?EPMA?,and room temperature quasi-static compression.Tungsten particle reinforced Zr based BMGCs were prepared by quartz tube water quenching,arc-melting and copper casting method,Spark Plasma Sintering?SPS?respectively.The experimental results show that the bulk metallic glass matrix prepared by quartz tube water quenching and arc-melting and copper casting method has obvious crystallization phenomenon,while bulk metallic glass matrix prepared by SPS can be guaranteed to be completely amorphous.Since the density of tungsten particles is quite different from that of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 bulk metallic glass matrix,the segregation of tungsten particles in the bulk metallic glass matrix can be easily caused by quartz tube water quenching and arc-melting and copper casting method.The sintering process of SPS is carried out at low temperature,which can limit the movement and diffusion of tungsten particles,so there is no obvious segregation phenomenon of tungsten particles in the bulk metallic glass matrix.The composites prepared by the three methods have more porosity and lower density,which leads to the decrease of mechanical properties of the composites.overall consideration,select SPS to preparation of the tungsten particle reinforced Zr based BMGCs at different sintering temperatures and pressures.The experimental results show that the sintering temperature and sintering pressure can increase the density of the composites.The effect of sintering temperature on the crystallization tendency group Bulk metallic glass matrix is more obvious than that of sintering pressure.In order to prepare tungsten particle reinforced Zr based BMGCs with completely amorphous and high density,sintering process parameters should be adjusted reasonably.In this research,the sintering temperature condition are 385?,395?and 405?respectively and sintering pressure condition are 180 MPa,240 MPa and300 MPa.Under the condition,the preparation of tungsten particles volume fraction of 20%,30%and 40%respectively group BMGCs is successful.And bulk metallic glass matrix is completely amorphous.the composite material of porosity decreased significantly,density is improved obviously.The mechanical properties of composites with different sintering parameters were studied by quasi-static compression experiment at room temperature.The morphology of compression fracture was observed by EPMA.The results show that the fracture strength of the composites increases with the increase of sintering temperature and sintering pressure.The fracture mode of composites is brittle fracture with almost no plastic deformation.The fracture occurs at the interface between tungsten particles or between tungsten particles and bulk metallic glass matrix particles.
