With increasing development of social industrialization and social consciousness upon health issues,indoor air purification has been attracting more and more public concern.Among myriad indoor air pollutions,formaldehyde and benzene series have located the forefront of the most hazardous ones.In this paper we applied immobilized active bacteria and modified active carbon for indoor air purification against formaldehyde and benzene series compounds.Three kinds of modified active carbons were used to test their superficial surfaces,pore structures and chemical compositions.At the same time,two different kinds of active immobilized active bacteria were introduced to the system and the surface functional groups,the dynamic mechanical properties and surface morphology were characterized respectively.We used HPLC method to test modifier's effect on formaldehyde adsorption and degradation.Besides,according to HS-GC results,BTEX‘s(benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,and xylenes)adsorption and degradation performance were clearly evaluated.Results show that the modified active carbon for formaldehyde and BTEX physical adsorption highly depends on their microporous,mesoporous structures and pore distribution;while chemical adsorption relies on the different types of surface functional groups,also related to the active carbon containing impurity ions and ash.For the same kind of activated carbon,different adsorption properties of formaldehyde and BTEX depend on the formaldehyde and benzene properties including boiling point,molecular weight,saturated vapor pressure,polarity,etc.Immobilized active bacteria degradation of formaldehyde and BTEX mainly depends on bio-compatibility between the embedding carriers and active bacteria,carriers' hydrophilicity and mechanical strength and the bacteria's biological tolerance.In addition,thorough domestication of active embedding bacteria to the best state during the early stage of purification is a crucial factor.In order for the purification of indoor air,one needs to combine the advantages of those two substances,saying biological enzyme composite and active carbon.For instance,active carbon's adsorption effect and biological enzyme composite's continuing degradation capacity.The synergy effects by active carbon's adsorption and bacteria's degradation has been proved to be a promising solution for indoor air purification and some other severe environmental issues.
