Paper-cutting is a kind of paper art with Yin and Yang lines,which is integrated with painting,sculpture and cutting.Paper-cutting art has an indelible cultural position in the long history of China.However,since the industrial revolution arrived,the development of traditional paper-cutting has shown a declining trend,while the emerging modern paper-cutting has opened up a road of its own.At the beginning of the 20 th century,with the changes of science,technology and humanistic thought,people’s perceptions on societies and lives have been impacted significantly,breeding many novelties which stimulated vision and mind.Art was destined to be the epicenter of the trend,the brand-new languages of art form came one after another and traditional culture including traditional paper-cutting has fallen victim to this phenomenon.Naturally,these new design concepts met the traditional paper-cutting art with a series of inevitable collisions on the Chinese mainland,creating unexpected and colorful sparks.The exploration of paper-cutting in the new era by many predecessors has made us develop fresh perspectives and form a stark contrast with the traditional paper-cutting.The previous glory of traditional paper-cutting has been lost and it has been listed in the world cultural heritage.This phenomenon makes people wonder what causes the current situation of traditional paper-cutting and what lessons can we learn from it? What is the difference between modern paper-cutting and traditional paper-cutting? What is the realistic significance of traditional paper-cutting and modern paper-cutting under the background of current ages? This dissertation investigates such issues from multiple aspects and views,beginning with Chinese traditional paper-cutting,exploring the evolutionary progress of traditional paper-cutting to modern paper-cutting,analyzing the differences between the two and how to integrate the spirit of the times and modern design concepts into this unfading traditional culture.Finally,the author shows and explains the modern paper-cutting art works,presenting the innovative ideas of designing,exploring the vitality,inheritance and cultural glamour of paper-cutting,which can also magnify the difference of cutting method and picture layout between modern paper-cutting and traditional paper-cutting,so as to achieve a higher level of cognition and understanding of paper-cutting art.The research is mainly divided into six parts: the first part expounds the relevant background of traditional paper-cutting,the purpose and significance of the research,researching methods and the current situations of domestic and foreign paper-cutting.The second part is about the overview of traditional paper-cutting.The third part analyzes the status quo of traditional paper-cutting and the development direction of modern paper-cutting,extracting the advantages of the two and drawing lessons from each other.The fourth part presents the in-depth investigation of modern paper-cutting and analysis of the famous modern paper-cutting artists’ works of art and characteristics.In the fifth part,the author carries out the practice of modern paper-cutting,which incorporates own thinking and innovation of paper-cutting culture.The sixth part,the conclusion,summarizes the comparison results and expresses the future prospect of traditional paper-cutting and modern paper-cutting.Through the dissertation,the author hopes to find the most suitable development route and themes of paper-cutting art form in the contemporary context. |
