Research Of Disease Naming Standardization In Surgery Of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background and PurposeIt took more than three thousand of years for surgery of traditional Chinese medicine to develop from the very first beginning inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells of the Shang Dynasty(c.16th-11th century B.C.)which were very original and simple to an independent discipline with full-fledged theory.Name of disease is a primary part in surgery of TCM study,it is a bond between theory and clinic which makes the researches about those names play important roles of the whole discipline studies.There are two factors that push us to pay great attention on unifying the usage of disease names.One is that traditional Chinese medicine has been challenged by modern idea since western medicine came to China almost one century ago.The other one is that TCM need to accommodate to the progress of time,to communicate with western medicine for self-enhance.Western medicine has many advantages which we can take for improving ourselves,so as the way of naming disease.About unifying the disease names of surgery of TCM,many experts have given a variety of solutions.But after decades of discussing,there comes no unified approach.I was enlightened by the usage of disease name in the teaching material"Surgery of Traditional Chinese Medicine" which was written by Liu Yang and published by the Science publishing house in 2013.In this teaching material,professor Yang presents a new principle about how to unify the way of naming diseases which is "the expressions of traditional Chinese medicine basic theory should follow modern language habits".With this guidance of principle,the writers replace some ancient Chinese disease names by modern medical disease names which are acknowledged by modern people.With the enlightenment from the Science pressed teaching material "Surgery of Traditional Chinese Medicin",I made a research about finding the habit and the tendency of disease name using in modern time by modern people.MethodsThis study contains paper research and questionnaire survey.Part one is periodical and thesis research,method:retrieve periodical and thesis discussing about TCM and published in 2004.1.1 to 2013.12.31.This retrieval result is the total data.Then two person log data with the EpiData3.1,the third person revise.After this,a database was set up,and there are 8652 samples that meet the inclusion criteria.Then use statistical software SPSS13.0 to analysis these samples,and describe the result as attribute data analysis.Part two is academic annual meeting article research.Articles are chosen from surgical academic conference of China association of Chinese medicine and dermatovenerology academic conference of nationwide Chinese and western combination medicine.Method and analysis are same as part one.Part three is questionnaire survey.Using" suggestion to disease name standardization of surgery of TCM" as the survey theme to design the questionnaire.Respondents includes students and doctors of TCM.Questionnaire was answered on net.After two months survey,there comes 144 serviceable questionnaire.Results75%of higher frequency of utilization disease name in 32 groups are used in"Surgery of Traditional Chinese Medicine" which published by the Science publishing house from 2004.1.1 to 2013.12.31.Yellow water sore,goose paw,cowhide tinea,nodule in breast,ecthyma,scrotal abscess,qi goiter which are used by Textbook that published by Chinese Medicine press.The one with higher frequency of utilization in 32 groups disease name comes from surgical academic conference of China association of Chinese medine article from 2009.1.1 to 2013.12.31 are:herpes zoster,pityriasis rosea,tinea pedis,eczema,drug eruption,pruritus cutanea,urticaria,neurodermatitis,psoriasis,leucoderma,chloasma,seborrheic dermatitis,alopecia areata,erythema nodosum,lupus erythematosus,mammitis,Hyperplasia of mammary,breast carcinoma,deep venous thrombosis,Superficial thrombophlebitis,varicose vein of lower limb,ecthyma,hemangioma,liposarcoma.The one with higher frequency of utilization in 32 groups disease name comes from dermatovenerology academic conference of nationwide Chinese and western combination medicine article from 2009.1.1 to 2013.12.31 are:herpes zoster,pityriasis rosea,yellow water sore,tinea manuun,tinea pedis,leucoderma,chloasm,seborrheic dermatitis,alopecia areata,erythema nodosum,lupus erythematosus,mammitis,Hyperplasia of mammary,nodule in breast,breast carcinoma,deep venous thrombosis,Superficial thrombophlebitis,varicose vein of lower limb,ecthyma,hemangioma,liposarcoma,simple struma,thyroid cancer.DiscussionThe results showed that there is dissimilarity in contemporary surgery of TCM disease name using frequency.The dissimilarity shows that disease names used in commonly modern language habits have higher frequency of utilization.Some disease names used in "Surgery of Traditional Chinese Medicine"that published by Chinese Medicine press are easily misunderstood,they are drug poison,blood tumour,sarcoma.Many scholars confuse the concepts of cowhide tinea and neurodermatitis and psoriasis.They usually think that cowhide tinea equals to psoriasis,but actually,cowhide tinea equals to neurodermatitis.Leucoderma is traditional Chinese disease name not western medical disease name.There are many articles about disease name standardization,but doctrines are real difficult to unit.Disease name standardization study is a part of fundamental research which matters clinical research and clinical effects.We hope this research results could give some advises to disease name standardization.
