Objective: To analyze factors contributing to left atrial enlargement in patients with idiopathic ventricular contractions. Methods: A total of 268 patients with idiopathic premature ventricular contractions(PVCs)in our hospital from March 2009 to November 2016 were included in this retrospective study. All patients underwent transthoracic echocardiography. And according to the left atrial diameter(LAD),patients were categorized as those with an enlarged left atrium(LA)and those with a normal left atrium.Through statistical analysis,we investigated the association of the enlarged LA,with factors of patients with idiopathic PVCs obtained from 24-hour Holter monitor and serum data. Results: Patients with enlarged LA,as compared to normal LA,had higher body mass index(BMI)(24.6±2.7kg/m2 vs 21.7±2.6kg/kg/m2)(P<0.001),increased burden of PVCs [0.26-58.92(15.10)% vs 0.01-77.53(10.88)%](P=0.043)and higher levels of n-terminal pro-b-type natriuretic peptide(NT-pro BNP)[9.6-4017.0(98.7)pg/ml vs 5.0-798.0(78.3)pg/ml](P=0.019).Conclusion: Clinical characteristics like PVCs burden,BMI and NT-proBNP might be associated with left atrial enlargement in patients with idiopathic PVCs.However, this study is unable to provide a causal relationship between these characteristics and LA enlargement, further work still need to do.
