Scirpus yagara Ohwi belongs to the genus of the family Cyperaceae.Its tuberous toots have been commonly used as a folk medicine in mainland China.It has been used in folk medicine for the treatment of postpartum abdominal pain,amenorrhea and inflammation related diseases.By the means of silica gel,PTLC,sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and spectroscopic evidences,25 compounds were isolated from 80%ethanol extracts of Scirpus yagara Ohwi,and 22 compounds and identified.Of these,two new cis-stilbenoids,named sciryagarol Ⅰ-Ⅱ(9-10),together with twenty known compounds were identified.20 compounds were identified as β-sitosterol palmitate(1),SanLeng diphenyllactone(2),β-sitosterol(3),ferulic acid(4),succinic acid(5),azelaic acid(6),docosanoic acid(7),6,7,10-trihydroxy-8-octadecenoic acid(8),sparstolonin B(11),cirsiumaldehyde(12),4,4-dimethy-1,7-pimelic acid(13),p-coumaric acid(14),vanillic acid(15),3,5-dihydroxy-4-methoxy-benzoic acid(16),p-hydroxybenzaldehyde(17),methyl-3,6-dihydroxy-2-[2(2-hydroxyphenyl)-ethynyl]-benzoate(18),2,7-dihydroxy xanthone(19),3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid(20),glycerol ferulate(21)and daucosterol(22).Of these,compounds 3-13,15-16 and 18-22 were isolated from Scirpus yagara Ohwi for the first time.Additionally,compounds 2,9,10 and 11 were then subsequently tested for their cytotoxicity against Hela,MGC-803 and SMMC-7721 human tumor cell lines and antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus.Compounds 2,9,10 and 11 showed significant cytotoxicity against the Hela cell lines with IC50 values 44.842,61.215,7.218 and 46.546 However,only compound 10 exhibited some antimicrobial activity against S.aureus and C.albicans with uniform MICs of 0.167 and 1.167 mg/ml,while the others didn’t exhibite any antimicrobial activity.
