Objectives: Maintaining good physical performance and oral hygiene in older age is an important element of good quality of life. The aim of our study is to investigate the association between tooth brushing frequency and physical performance in suburb-dwelling older Chinese population. Methods: Data are from 1276 of older individuals age ?60 in Tianjin Hangu(average age 67.2±6.1,male 574,female 702).Mobility,balance,and muscle strength were assessed by walking speed(4-meter walking test),timed up-and-go test(TUGT),and grip strength, respectively.Oral health condition was assessed through questionnaires. The subjects were categorized into three groups good, well and bad according to tooth brushing frequency and use of cleaning tools.Subject who brushing their teeth less the 2 times/day without using tools is bad, those who brushing teeth more than 2 times/day without tools use and less than 2 times/day with tools use is well, and tooth brushing more than 2 times/day with tools use is good.Questioner include the basic information collection of subject, medical history and living condition, such as age, gender, marital status, smoking and drinking.History of diseases including whether suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, stroke, coronary heart disease and other chronic disease.Based on three years of follow-up,we will track follow-up survey for those who have 2 times of analysis,a total of 957 subjects were analyzed.Using the same questionnaire survey and comprehensive health assessment, the patient condition of 3 years later compared with the condition of the first year, the participants' ability to physical activity status and disease and comparison between the new rate by using single factor analysis of variance and chi-square test were compared, and logistic regression analysis was carried out on the new disease,in the end,the mortality of the subjects and the connection between the brush your teeth using COX logistic regression analysis. Results: In this study,a total of 574 men, average age was 67.9 ± 6.6,702 women, average age was 66.5 ±5.6 accept the analysis. In baseline study, age, income and tooth loss was statistically significant in the basis analysis of the study. In the multivariate analysis, the correct age, weight,BMI,income, smoking, drinking,IPAQ,high blood pressure, duodenal ulcer, tools use and loss of teeth. On multivariate analysis, male balance ability was significantly better good oral health condition group as compared to the bad oral health condition group(p=0.013).good oral health has positive associated with mobility in the female compared with whose oral health is bad(p=0.027).There is no significantly association between tooth brushing frequency and grip strength in either male or female. In the longitudinal study, the average age of follow-up was 66.2 ± 5.3 years, oral health condition bad is 407,a total of oral health condition well is 438 people, and group good is 112 people,a year after the incidence of stroke incidence and sarcopenia have obvious difference, among them, the incidence of sarcopenia were 4.4%,4.1%,1.2%,(p =0.033).In the logistic regression analysis showed that after adjustment for covariate, the incidence of sarcopenia in greater than or equal to 2 times brushing your teeth and use tools significantly reduced incidence of the crowd,Odd radio(95% CI)was 0.189(0.042-0.846),with statistical significance.During three years of mortality analysis, the deaths of three groups were 32(7.8%),15(3.4%),3(2.6%),the logistic COX regression analysis, the adjustment for age, gender,BMI,widowed, live alone,IPAQ,smoking, drinking, after loss of teeth and gums bleeding, brushing their teeth in greater than or equal to 2 times and use the brush tool lower mortality in the population, the risk than Hazard ratio(95% CI)was 0.336(0.127-0.894),with statistical significance. Conclusions: This study suggests that in older individuals, good oral health condition has positive associated with balance ability in male and mobility in female.Oral health as a significant component, may be an important factor in improving and preventing decline of physical performance. The factors identified in this study may be used in community health programs for maintaining the physical performance of the elderly.
