Objective: To explore the influences of reasons for living, coping style and self-esteem on suicidal ideation in patients with unipolar and bipolar depression, and providing new theoretical support for clinical prevention and intervention of suicidal ideation in patients with unipolar and bipolar depression. Methods: 122 patients with unipolar and bipolar depression who were treated in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical university, including 47 bipolar depression patients and 75 unipolar depression patients, participated in this study from August 2018 to February 2019.The general questionnaire,Beck Depression Inventory-II(BDI-II),the Chinese Version of the Reasons for Living Inventory(RFL-C),Trait Coping Style Questionnaire(TCSQ),The Self-Esteem Scale(SES),and Self-rating Idea of Suicide Scale(SIOSS)were used by the unipolar and bipolar depression patients to assess. All data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 19.0 software.Results:1.The first onset age of patients with bipolar depression(26.79±11.06 years old)was lower than that of unipolar depression patients(31.49 ± 11.94 years old),the difference was statistically significant(p=0.031),and the number of hospitalizations was more than that ofunipolar depression patients, the difference was statistically significant(p<0.001).2.There was no significant difference in the severity of depression, the total score of the Reasons for Living Inventory and its dimensions, the total score of self-esteem scale, positive coping style, and negative coping style in patients with unipolar and bipolar depression(p>0.05).3.There was no significant difference in the scores of suicidal ideation, suicidal ideation and their dimensions in patients with unipolar and bipolar depression(p>0.05).4.BDI-II total score(r=0.439,p<0.01)and negative coping style(r=0.372,p<0.01)had significant positive correlation with suicidal ideation in unipolar depression patients. The total score of self-esteem scale(r=-0.678,p<0.01),total score of the Reasons for Living Inventory(r=-0.291,p<0.05)and positive coping style(r=-0.405,p<0.01)had significant negative correlation with suicidal ideation in unipolar depression patients.5.BDI-II total score(r=0.641,p<0.01)and negative coping style(r=0.393,p<0.01)had significant positive correlation with suicidal ideation in bipolar depression patients. The total score of self-esteem scale(r=-0.764,p<0.01),total score of the Reasons for Living Inventory(r=-0.629,p<0.01)and positive coping style(r=-0.405,p<0.01)had significant negative correlation with suicidal ideation in bipolar depression patients.6.The mediation effect showed that, reasons for living and positive coping style played partial intermediary role in depression and suicidal ideation, the rate of mediation effect is 15.4% and 16.7%,positive coping style played partial intermediary role in reasons for living and suicidal ideation, the rate of mediation effect is 23.4%,positive coping style played partial intermediary role in self-esteem and suicidal ideation, the rate of mediation effect is 8.2%.Conclusion:1.There was no significant difference in suicidal ideation level and suicidal ideation between patients with unipolar and bipolar depression.2.Positive coping style played partial intermediary role between reasons for living and suicidal ideation, positive coping style played partial intermediary role between self-esteem and suicidal ideation.
