| Objectives1.To understand the current situation and influencing factors of emergency nursing staff’s communication ability to suicide attempt patients.2.To compare the difference of emergency nurses’scores on communication frequency, communication importance, communication difficulty before and after the communication training,as well as the influence of training on the nursing satisfaction of suicide attempt patients.Method1.Under the guidance of American Suicide Prevention Resource Center"caring for adult patients at risk of suicide——consensus guide for emergency department"and incentive interview technology,45 emergency nursing staff’s in a 3A hospital in Wuhan were selected by cluster sampling to conduct three sessions of communication training. To survey the present situation of emergency nurse’s communication ability to suicide attempt patients via the verbal and social interaction questionnaire. To analysis the influence factors of communication ability via single factor analysis of variance and multivariate linear regression.2.To evaluate the effectiveness of the communication training through emergency nurses’communication frequency, importance, difficulty scores and the nursing satisfaction score of suicide attempt patients before and after the training.Results1.Before training, communication frequency’s item average score was 2.47±0.52,communication importance’s was 2.64±0.51,communication difficulty’s was 2.25±0.44and patient satisfaction score was 125.17±5.20.The four dimensions’score orders were consistent in communication frequency and importance——from high to low were caring for health and well-being,establishing caring relationship, encouraging daily social contact and exploring feelings and thoughts.Scores in communication difficulty from high to low was exploring feelings and thoughts, establishing caring relationships, caring for health and well-being and encouraging daily social contact.2.After training the item average score of communication frequency, importance, difficulty as well as patient satisfaction score were 2.71±0.53、2.84±0.48、2.11±0.43、132.80±5.75,and there were statistically significant differences between before and after training(t=-9.591,-5.124,4.494,-5.390,P<0.05).3.The total score of communication frequency before training had a linear relationship with the score of importance of communication and working years(adjusted R~2=0.660),while had nothing to do with the nurse’s gender, age, education degree, professsional title, position or the level of communication difficulty.Nurses with a longer working life and a higher level of awareness of the communication importance had a higher communication frequency to patients with attempted suicide. The total score of communication frequency after training had a linear relationship only with the importance of communication(adjusted R~2=0.642).The total score of communication difficulty was not related to the total score of communication frequency, which resulted from emergency nursing staff"knew it easily but did not communicate"about encouraging suicide attempt patients to associate with others.4.The praise rate of the emergency department nursing staff for this training was100%.The suggestions focused on adding scenario simulation and case analysis.Conclusion1.The communication ability of the emergency nurses to the suicide attempted patients was at the medium level. They didn’t value and communicate enough in exploring patients’ideas and encouraging patients to socialize.2.The working years and the degree of attention to communication were the main influencing factors of communication ability.3.Communication training can enhance the emergency nursing staff’s communication frequency, importance awareness to communication and self-efficacy,and improve the patients’satisfaction with nursing services. Therefore, communication training should be strengthened through multiple forms and theories combined with practices. |
