The surgical treatment of fracture by open reduction and internal fixation has become extremely common and widely used.Although the vast majority of fractures treated with modern internal fixation techniques will heal, complications associated with fractures with internal fixation occasionally occur. The possibility of infection, neurovascular injury, and skin flap necrosis are significantly higher, which can cause the most visible and serious consequences, both delayed union and nonunion. Therefore, early accelerating fracture healing is both necessary and important to prevent short-and long-term complications and minimize the occurrence of delayed union and nonunion, which orthopedic surgeons and rehabilitation physicians are increasingly being obligated to deal with. The use of microwave diathermy in fracture healing is not a novel concept. There has been an abundance of relevant reports and research since 1993,when Leon et al.systematically demonstrated that the microwave diathermy promoted bone deposition in fracture healing both in vitro and in vivo.Until now the method has been gradually accepted, but on a limited basis. As a considerable amount of microwave energy can be reflected or refracted at the interfaces between tissue and the metal implant used in orthopedic surgery, traditionally it was forbidden as an absolute contraindication applied to fractures with metal-implanted internal fixation. However, opinions have pointed out that the contraindication is based on consensus rather than on scientific evidence.Internal fixation of fractures using titanium alloy has been gaining popularity.Given that the magnetic permeability and electric conductivity of titanium alloy is lower compared to the conventional biomedical metal implants.Recently Ye et al.have demonstrated that 25 W microwave(2,450 MHz)can improve the healing of fractures with titanium alloy internal fixation without irreversible heat damage(﹤41 ?C)in a rabbit model. The goals of our experiments are to further verify the security and feasibility of the advanced therapy from another aspect by the impact of microwave irradiation on the proliferation of MSCs.This study created the model of internal fixation after fracture, rabbit quadriceps femoris were token to cultivate satellite cells in vitro. The proliferation and differentiation of skeletal muscle satellite cells were evaluated by the techniques such as immunohistochemical staining、TEM、 MTT.
