Objectives: To observe the effect of far infrared ray on mandible in functional correction in patients with skeletal mandibular retraction of Angle Class II division 1 malocclusion.Method: Seventeen patients(7 males 9.8±1.3 years,10 females 9.4±1.6 years)with skeletal mandibular retraction in stage CS2-3 of cervical vertebra maturity stage were selected by inclusion and exclusion criteria and divided into three groups for comparison, including functional orthopedic group A,orthopedic combined far-infrared treatment group B and untreated control group C.During the treatment period of three months, the mandibular size, mandibular incisor angle and mandibular position were measured before and after treatment.SPSS software was used to compare the results within and between groups.Paired t-test was used for the results before and after treatment, and ANOVA was used for the results between groups. Results: After three months of treatment,intra-group comparison showed that the changes in Co-Gn and Co-Go were statistically significant in all three groups(P < 0.05),while the changes in Go-Gn and LIMP were not statistically significant in each group, and the differences in SNB were only statistically significant in group A and B.The intergroup comparisons showed that the changes of Co-Gn and Co-Go before and after treatment had statistical differences in all three groups(P < 0.05),while the changes of Go-Gn and LI-MP before and after treatment had no statistical differences between A,B and C groups, and the changes of SNB only had statistical differences in A-C group(P < 0.01).The comparison of the results of each groups showed that the results of group C were higher than those of the other groups, followed by group A.Conclusion: Compared with the Twin-block functional appliance, the far infrared ray can coordinate and combine it to promote obvious skeletal changes in the mandible in a short period of time,of which the main changes occur in the mandibular rumas.
