Background:Diabetes has become a public health problem that seriously affects residents’ health. The high disability and mortality caused by diabetes related complications seriously affect human health and life expectancy, which has become the seventh and fourth cause of disability worldwide and in china respectively.China has a large population base and thus a huge diabetic population. However the awareness rate of diabetes is low, accompanied by lack of accurate knowledge of diabetes and its related complications.Though people’s health consciousness is improved, the annual incidence of type 2 diabetes(T2DM)is increasing. The treatment and control rate of diabetes is still low.Patients with new diagnosed diabetes have insufficient understanding of diabetes. Some patients are overreacted in diabetes and others pay less attention to diabetes. Therefore,it is imperative to promote and popularize diabetes education.Peer education is a diabetic patient-centred model, which have developed both at home and abroad and is becoming more mature. It has great significance for improving life quality, delaying disease progression, reducing the occurrence of complications and lowing the economic burden of individual and family. Objective:We aimed to apply peer education on patients with newly diagnosed diabetes and observe its effects on blood glucose control, metabolic disorders and self-management ability,so as to explore a education model that is applicable to patients with newly diagnosed T2 DM and a more economical, effective and feasible education model suitable for promotion in the community. Methods:Two hundred patients with newly diagnosed T2 DM who were admitted to Taiqian community in Tai’an City from January 2016 to January 2017 were selected and were divided into the experimental group and the control group according to the random number table method.Patients in the control group were given routine diabetes education, and those in the experimental group were given peer education in addition to routine education. After 6 months, the changes of fasting plasma glucose(FPG),2-hour postprandial glucose(2h PG),glycosylated hemoglobin(Hb Al),total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),low density lipoprotein-cholesterol(LDL-c),high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-c),body mass index(BMI),systolic blood pressure(SBP),diastolic blood pressure(DBP),and the summary of diabetes self-care activities(SDSCA)score between the groups were observed.Results:1.There was no significant difference between the two groups in age, sex, body mass index, blood pressure, blood glucose, blood lipids(P>0.05).2.At the end of study, the levels of FPG,2h PG,Hb Alc,in both groups are lower compared with those before intervention, however with more decrease in peer education group(p<0.05).After intervention, the rate of achieving target blood glucose was significantly higher in peer education group than that in the control group(p<0.05).3.After intervention, the level of TC,TG and LDL-C in both groups are lower compared with those before intervention, however with more decrease in experimental group(p<0.05).HDL-C levels were higher after intervention, which was more pronounced in the experimental group(p<0.05).BMI,SBP,and DBP decreased after intervention, but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).4.After intervention,The score of self-management scale, including management of diet, exercise and drug, glucose monitor, foot care and prevention of hperglycemia and hypoglycemia, increased significantly in both groups(p<0.05),and the difference was more markedly in the group with peer education(p<0.05).Conclusions:1.For patients with newly diagnosed T2 DM,peer education is more effective for blood glucose and blood lipid control.2.For patients with newly diagnosed T2 DM,peer education has more great efficacy in improving self-management ability and the rate of achieving target blood glucose.3.Given that peer education is simple and easy to operate,it is a education model warranted early promotion among patients with new diagnosed T2 DM.
