| Background Suicide has been the major public health and social problem in the world which is the first leading cause of death among 15-34 years old in China.Suicidal ideation is an important risk factor for suicide prediction. The large-scale migrant workersare one of hallmarks of economic development in China and the proportion of women has been on the rise. The Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Deltaare important economic regions which are presented with Shanghai and Guangzhou andlarge-scale migrant workers live in.The continuous suicide deaths aroused public attention to the poor mental health of the migrant workers especially the women. It was reported migrant unmarried women workers has the poorer mental health than be married. There are few studies targeting specially at the suicidal ideation among the migrant unmarried women. Objective To investigatethe suicidal ideation among unmarried female migrant workers in coastal metropolises explore the associationbetween some psychosocial problems, reproductive health factors, risk behavior, social supportand suicidal ideation and construct structural equation model to explore the path of suicide ideationMethods A questionnaire survey was conductedamong 3553 unmarried female migrant workersin two factories in Shanghai and Guangzhou byconvenient sampling.Logistic regression was used to analyze the related factors of suicidal ideationincluding psychosocial problems、reproductive health factors、risk behavior and social support.A structured equation model based the problem behavior theory was used to assess the developed prediction model. Results Overall,287(8.1%)ofthe respondents had suicidal ideation during the past year.Univariatelogistic regression showed that self-esteem,anxiety,loneliness,depression,attitude toward premarital pregnancy, attitude toward multiple induced abortion, unplanned pregnancy, unplanned induced abortion, alcohol, emotional support, economic supportwere related to suicidal ideation after correcting demographic factors.Multivariatelogisticregressionshowedthatlow self-esteem(ORm =1.47,95% CI =1.03-2.11),loneliness(ORm =3.30,95% CI =2.42-4.51),poor economic support(ORm =3.79,95%CI =2.86-5.04),poor emotional support(ORm =2.68,95% CI =2.00-3.61)and alcohol(ORm=1.42,95% CI =1.04-1.93)were the critical factors. Our constructed model showed an acceptable fit to the data((c2/DF=4.765,RMSEA=0.033,GFI=0.993,NFI=0.984,CFI=0.987).Suicidal ideation was predicted by personality system(β =0.201,P<0.001)consisting of depression(β =0.876,P<0.001),loneliness(β=0.693,P<0.001),anxiety(β=0.715,P<0.001)and self-esteem(β=-0.537,P<0.001)and perceived environment system(β=0.273,P<0.001)consisting of emotional support(β=0.739,P<0.001),economic support(0.765,P<0.001)and behavior system(β=-0.044,P<0.05)consisting of smoke(β=0.612,P<0.001),alcohol(β=0.756,P<0.001)and reproductive health behavior(β=0.188,P<0.001).The behavior system and the perceived environment system(β=0.112,P<0.001),the behavior system and the personality system(β=0.313,P<0.001),the perceived environment system and the personality system(β=0.338,P<0.001)were interrelated. Conclusion The factors such as risk behavior, psychosocial problems, lack of social support etc.were associated with increased odds for suicidal ideation among the unmarried female migrant workers. The behavior system、the perceived environment system and the personality systemwere interrelatedand directly affected suicidal ideation. We should construct prevention and intervention mechanism to enhance social support to effectively prevent the occurrence of suicide ideation. |
