Background:This meta-analysis is done to assess the benefit of Intravenous infusion of lidocaine for pain management in patient undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy(LC).Methods:A systematic search was performed in Pub Med,SEU library website,Web of Science,Science Direct, google scholar and the Cochrane Library.RCTs comparing lidocaine with other various drugs in patients undergoing LC were searched.Language restriction was not placed and after going through collected articles, primarily visual analogue scale(VAS)score at 12 hours and 24 hours were noted down. The secondary endpoint was total opioid consumption during total hospital stay.Data were collected independently by two investigators and the data and quality of the trials were evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration-specific software Revman 5.3 following completion of data collection. Results: Five RCTs were finally included in the meta-analysis.After performing Meta-analysis using Revman, final results indicated that intravenous lidocaine was associated with reduced pain scores at 12 hours(-0.95 [-1.33,-0.57] MD IV,fixed,95% CI)and 24 hours(-0.56 [-0.93,-0.19] MD IV,fixed,95% CI)postoperative LC,similarly, when compared opioid consumption during postoperative phase,4 RCT showed reduced opioid consumption, however one of study included in study showed no significant advantage of lidocaine over placebo in regards to opioids consumption(-26.95 [-53.23,-0.66] MD IV,fixed,95% CI).Similarly, lidocaine was associated with a reduction in the incidence of nausea and vomiting,in addition ileus and pruritus. Conclusion: Intravenous lidocaine infusion significantly reduces postoperative pain score and opioid consumption after LC.In addition, there were reduced incidents of nausea, vomiting, ileus and pruritus.
