A Socio-semiotic Approach To The Translation Of Taiwanese Pilgrimage To China

This thesis tries to explore how to employ socio-semiotic methods in translation.The writer selects as the source text for translation the second chapter of Taiwanese Pilg-rimage to China,written by DJ W.Hatfield,Assistant Professor in Liberal Arts at Berklee College of Music and published in 2010,as it contains many religious,cultural and political descriptions which can be best interpreted through socio-semiotic approach.Therefore,how to accurately transfer religious,cultural and political elements in the source text to the target text by means of socio-semiotic methods is the dominant study object of this thesis.The first part of the thesis makes a brief introduction to the contents of socio-semiotics and semiotic meaning theory,and explicates the necessity and significance of socio-semiotic methods in transferring linguistic,designative and pragmatic meanings as this approach can properly represent religious and political narratives in the target language.The second part of the thesis makes analyses of language features in the second chapter of Tailaneserimage to China.Socio-semiotic translation approaches and translation examples are combined to present how the author applied different translation methods in translating different semiotic meanings of the source text with the purpose of effectively representing the socio-semiotic meanings conveyed in the religious,cultural and political elements of the source text.The final part of the thesis presents the conclusion that the socio-semiotic translation methods are of signification in translating sociological texts that contribute to representing the meaning of source text and improving translation quality.
