Philippe Sollers(1936—)is a famous contemporary French novelist and critic.Le Clezio,Modiano and Sollers are called "the three stars of the French literature"since the second part of twentieth century. As we all know,Le Clezio and Modiano were the Nobel Laureates in Literature on 2008 and 2014 respectively.Sharing the same reputation with two Nobel Laureates,Sollers is worth of more attention in China and his thoughts should be valued. In this case, the translation of Sollers‘works is of great importance. This article is based on the translation of four articles in Eloge de l'infini and discusses the translation of the definite article, especially the definite article of anaphoric function and cataphoric function. This article consists of three parts:introduction, exposition and conclusion. In the introduction,we introduce the task of translating Eloge de l'infini and give a brief overview study of the definite article and the problem of definity in Chinese. The significance of the article is also presented in the introduction. The second part consists of three chapters. In the first chapter,we discuss the definition and the functions of the definite article. The funtions of the French article are various, while in Chinese, there is no conception of definity nor the definite article, which on the one hand, results in the difficulty of translation and on the other hand, initiates the capacious possibility of translation. The second and third chapters are devoted to the analysis of the definite article's translation in Eloge de l'infini, especially the definite article of anaphoric function and cataphoric function. For the translator, the French definite article, compared with the verb or the adjective,is somewhat easy to comprehend. However,it is never easy to translate it.We conclude from this detailed study on translation of the definite article in Eloge de l'infini the following conclusions:with the various functions of the definite article and the lack of definite article in Chinese,we can't simplify the translation of the definite article and should study the strategies of translation according to the article's usages;the article of anaphoric and cataphoric shows us the chances of developing the translation, and the usage of ?/? and the bare noun is quite general;in the definite article of cataphoric, the bare noun is universal and the free translation is also common. In many cases, the definite article can be ignored.
