| Russia was a time of politics and economic turbulence in the 19th century.This was an important time when the western modern civilization strongly against the sleeping Russia,especially Europe bourgeois revolution was shaking up the whole country.So under the influence of western modernity,Russia embarked on the path of modernization.A group of advanced youth self-consciousness was also awakening,they realized that Europe advanced system and developed productivity,which decided to break the traditional-social structure of Russia so as to learn from the western modern civilization.The ideology also obtained great reflection in literary works,such as "superfluous man" and "new man" occurred in the Russian literature and formed the unique portraits.Especially the "new man",after the specific image determined by Turgenev and Chernyshevsky,many writers had continued to add new cultural connotation of "new man",Dostoevsky is one of them.By inheriting the tradition "new man",Dostoevsky created the "new man" who was divided,alienated,and ceased o live on the strength of profound insight and anatomy to the person.These images were not only successful retort for the contemporary writers,but also embodied Dostoevsky’s forward-looking visible of Russian undeveloped modernism.This thesis is divided into three chapters,the first chapter takes the "new man" roots for instance,know the traditional "new man" cultural background,basic characteristics and the differences between Dostoevsky’s "new man" and traditional "new man".The second chapter takes Dostoevsky’s novels:the Underground Notes,Crime and Punishment,the Possessed,the Brothers Karamazov as examples to analysis Dostoevsky’s "new man" specific characteristics.The third chapter discusses the modern factors of Dostoevsky’s "new man"and traditional "new man" by the definition of "modern man",to explore the writer’s the complex experience of modernity. |
