A Comparative Study Of The Motif Of Women’s "Escape" Between Su Tong And Alice Munro

There are many similarities between famous writers Su Tong and Alice Munro,the former has admitted his love for the latter as well as selected her short story in his book.What’s more,the Women’s Paradise of Su Tong and Runaway of Alice Munro are both concerned about the topic of "running away from women".Therefore,this thesis tries to start from the "theme" of Comparative Literature,taking "escape" motif as the starting point,taking Harem,Women’s Life,Another Woman’s Life,Pink of Su Tong and Runaway,Chance,Soon,Silence,Passion,Trespasses,Tricks,Powers of Munro as research objects,at the same time,using "parallel study method" and combining Freud Psychoanalysis,Beauvoir Feminist theory,to explore the application of this motif in the creation of Chinese and Western different gender writers on the same subject matter,then deeply understand the social and cultural psychological connotation of the images of women in the two person,as we l l as th e co m m on hum a ni s t i c ca r e and spi r i t ua l tem p er a m e nt.This thesis including five sections:the first part expounds the reasons and innovations of the topic,and combs the domestic and foreign research results about Su Tong,Munro and their "escape" texts of women.The second part aiming at the mixing phenomenons of escape theme or motif of many articles in academic circles,and based on theoretical works of scholars including Yue Daiyun,Chen Dun and Chen Zhaorong,will clear the concept of theme,motif,determine the "escape" is the "motif",and outline its origin and development according to Chen Zhaorong’s monograph "the motif of vagrancy and Western Classical literature interpretation"(the tradition of the Homer,Bible and the writer’s vagrant life and the vagrant complex of their works).The third part reads their "escape" texts of women from the concepts about women of Su Tong,the causes(personality and environmental factors),ways(leave,autism),results(death,return,degeneration),dreams analysis of women’s "escape"(satisfaction of desire;mental,physical stimulation can be a dream;symbol expresses the sexual contents;absurdity contains profound meanings),feminist theory practice of Beauvoir(women are not born but acquired;they hate and refuse theirgender identity;unmarried women hold the dominant power to resist the passive fate while married women often fall into the dilemma of frigidity and morbid attachment)and the comparison of women’s views(evil of human nature).The fourth part focuses on the "escape" motif writing situation in Canada and China’s Modern and Contemporary Literature,compares it with Su Tong and Munro’s writing,after understand the relationships can help to grasp the connotation of "escape" writing(violent memory,pain and suffering,anxiety and confusion of modern people,marginal experience and identity construction).The fifth part summarizes the thesis,and analyses the same "theme" differences of two people(female growth or tragedy).
